ABOUT THIS EPISODE

We talked to celebrity stylist Ray Christopher about how he really didn't want to be a hairstylist. How a Prince video shoot was his first gig. And how his relationship with Adrienne Bailon got him his gig at The Real.

Hey stunners, we are back with the cut life podcast, where we talk to the best hair stylists in the business, and I am so excited, and I said no, I say I'm excited a lot, but no, I'm really excited because I have the celebrity stylist to all of your favorite it girls on the phone, Mr Ray Christopher, Aka here for kicks on IG. How Are you, Ray? I'm good. Are you? I am amazing and so happy to finally have you on the podcast. I know that we have cross paths maybe once or twice in person and then obviously be a social media but I've never had a chance to really talk to you about your story and your journey. So this is a special moment for us and for those of you that are unfamiliar, you definitely have to get familiar. You cut and style the hair of a few of our faves that we feature all the time. We have to shout out breezy from Empire Ravan. Obviously, every time we post a pic of her and the hair all my gosh, like she gets a minimum tenzero likes. That's like minimum on her own every picture. Yes, yes, so we have to credit you for keeping her fly at all times. and N see Nash as well. We featured her with her Bob and she always gets a lot of love for that snatched body and Bob. And then not to mention that you are also a key hair stylist for the real I know Adriaan Valion is one of your major clients that you work with, yes, and we constantly see you going live every day. You're very consistent about that. I have to give you KUDOS. Thank you. So let's talk about we talked about all these amazing things that you have going on and we're going to definitely revisit it later in the conversation, but I wanted to talk about the start of your career and how you broke into the hair industry from day one. Like what is raised story? Okay, from what I'm excited to be here, you know, on the phone with you right now. I love a cut life and and it's one of my go two sights when I can't think of anything else. It's always right term, because you guys have bother. Oh, I love that. Thank you so much, as an honor for you to say that. But me getting started, I started so interesting. I never wanted to do hair. Hair was not one of my ambitions at all. I was actually a pool to be a deputy probation officer. Are you see? You're is yes,...

I would say all ready to hear how you got from one into the other, but go ahead. It was in you from my mom, is a deputy for based on certain I always wanted to do her job to seem fun that she got to work with kids and something about a light. So I was like, on this, that sounds like what I want to do. The money's great, college and School for that. But I stopped because my best friend told me you're creative. I thought, like you could do here with the school. Started with that. I found a mentor who actually went to my church, Tim Berry. She had been doing prints. Oh No, he won't, what a mentor. That's she. Season was like eighteen years at that point of Cypical for makeing years, and so you know all of his cut. That's really while. I my store hair from her and she told me if I went to school and got my license then she would let me work hard. My very first video was a prince video. Are you serious? Yes, I'm Christian and clover. I did that video actually the first time Missi Copelan with that friend of music video, and you know she's a part of the Black Ballet. Yes, yes, definitely would love Miss Copeland. At the beginning of her career was the beginning of mine. Were actually the same. HEABY's at that photo shoot, I mean video shoot. So it was that. That's how I started. You know, you're like you were making it all cute, like Oh, it was fun. No, Ray, you were on a shoe with a prince and this is your first celebrity, I know, out of school. Like, what are you say? In my mind, I really I know, I'm so blessed because I started. I started out, you know, so far in the game. You know, most people don't get there first, you know, celebrity experience until they're four or five years in the game. Right exactly. I was still in school and I did his video. So Fabre, God's baby. Yeah, that's got the definitely in the business. Yes, I love that. So that experience for you was that basically that stamp of approval in your mind to say, you know what, I really need to focus on this and take and continue on this path. Actually know what I would back to school for Covidal Justice Are you serious? Yes, I went back to because I was always taught and I necessarily taught. But my parents have always had jobs, you know, they've always worked. I've always seen my parents work. No one has ever been at home. Just chilling right in my mind. I want to have a backup plane just to take care. Didn't work. Job Security, right, right. So, Um, when went back to school. But then I did. I did not finish because I got I was on the way to class Monday and I got a call...

...from really tour manager, you said. WHO's tour manager? Britney spirits. Oh, just listen. Okay, continue for a Princeton Pretty Spears like Ray. He's like Lee. Let me get my criminal justice degree real quick. Okay. So he called me and act if I can come in and do her. She was coming to La for the circus tour and act if I could be a part of that. And I mean, I guess I never went back to class after that. Actually didn't go that day. Wow to my car, got in with home, got dressed and goes universal studios and did that with her all day. So Um, yeah, it was an interesting Dirney for me, an interesting journey and not. And it didn't really start that long ago, because if you think about Britney Spear Circus Album, was that a few years ago that she dropped album? So, yeah, you've been like on the run, like yeah, twenty five year vet out here. It's so crazy. When I say a decade now, I've been ten years now. But I start, I mean the amount of work that you have been and the results of that work. It looks like people that we've talked to you that have been in the game for over Towey, whatever. Yes, yes, very true, very, very good. I'm so blessed I've been here. You absolutely are. So you're working with Brittany and you do the circus tour. So how do things continue to evolved for you from there? It was more so word amout. MMM, one once, one person knows your name. Is Industry is very much it's a girlfriend industry. You know what I mean? It's bray girlfriend, who she goes and side that person. Now do I like him? Is He could to work? Right, then be around, because you know, it's all about that in the industry. Like your talent and skill. But can I stand being around you for a long time? Right, right, and hair styling is very intimate as well. Right, right, right, right, right, all right. Um, so, you know, that's pretty much how everybody started knowing me from. You know, I started going different circles and then I met Ravan. Yes, I've never remember monstortly, after that she was fine to compound a dream will find the compound at the same time, which is how I'm at Adrian, the Raybond. Okay, the connection makes sense to me now, like, okay, right, for seeing, Adrian did x facted together, after we did x fact took together. We have been together. Actually, the first season of that factor is what we did together. Okay, okay, yeah, so when Simon Simon put the harmony together, that's see what we wrong. You're describing the relationship with Adrian and how you met her in one arena and then you moved with her to different arenas and now you're styling her daily for the real so tell some of our listeners and aspiring stylist that might be listening about the importance of building these types of...

...long lasting relationships with your clients and like, what are some of the tips or things that you would recommend to people who want to make a good, lasting impression and to be able to have long standing clients, whether they're celebrity or non celebrity clients. Right, I can tell you about both, because I still have a salon client tale as well as celebrities. I don't know how you manage it all. A lot of people ask me still do normal people here, quote quote unquote. Right, right, feel like everyone is normal, you know what I mean. So, yes, I still do all hair. I have a falon in the felon Republican everything hills, so that's from as if I'm not on set or you know, but a Duran. We actually have the same conversation with someone else not too long ago, telling them that you should always have one or two good, good girlfriends that you know are always going to hold you down. Right, you know, Adrian is a client and a good, good girlfriend. If I always going to hold me down. She had just came, he had just got done with all the Cheeta girl movies and she was moving back out here for some reason. And this is also going to do x factor. So she asked me, when he first met me, what I wanted to do, and I'm Oh, I want to be in the union by the time I'm twenty five. You know, I want to do this, do that, and have a whole bunch different celebrity clients and she's like, okay, I'm gonna make the I'm gonna help you make that happen. Wow, this is the first day we met each other, and so I'm like, girl, you don't know me right. You like no, no, I can see your hustle, and so you know, you remind me and me you know, I started up for she was something. She started at fourteen and she wanted to help. So okay, cool. We became really, really good friends over the years. We've done everything together. When she got the real that was the most interesting turn of events. They kept flying her back and forth out here to audition for the show, and every time you call me and be like Ray, I need to do my hair. Come stay in the hole, because it was always be like in the valley or something. Right now I live. I lived in Sarritos, corthborne county at that time, so I would drive our way out to the valley in the night in the hotel with her, Waked up at like zero in the morning. You her hair, she would do her own makeup, she would go, go audition, come back. We taken that go the lunch to have a second hard distance. I would do were here for that. Then she would go get her fly, I will go back home and we would continue. Likely you were in the trenches with her for this. I love that. And so after like the sixth and seven times, they called her back out here. She's like, I think I got it. You you ready to be on? You ready to be in the union, and I'm like yeah, but you know how you say yeah because he's just like yeah, I'm ready to do it. But a girl, you don't want the hype yourself up too soon, right. So even a few years at that point. So you...

...know, she's my friend, but I'm still like, I don't want to put on my egs in my basket. She gets the show and they call me and they're like hey, the real ones to hire you as a hair stiles for genie. My Wow, and so whatso when you were offered the position, it wasn't even for Adrian to begin with. It was for genie by at first. Let me tell you why. Because they all had a first person and a second person to pick from. You know, to mean a and to be if they're a wasn't available, than they will go to be. Well, I was Adrian's a person. Is that she had to be. Will Genie's be person with Adrian's a? D's a person was Adrians B person. So he automatically was when he couldn't do it. Now they both only had one option, me right, and they started with genie before they even got to Adrian. You know. I mean they picked her. She picked her glam person. Wow, okay. So they automatically called me and asked me to do that and I was like no, I turned it down. Wow, I called Adrian. Is My book, right. I called her and she was like they're crazy. Call them back and tell them you're going to take the job. And I'm like, girl, I know, I am not doing her this. Girl, if she like get the job, will switch later. It's not that serious. And I'm like you're really try to help me right. Yeah, that's a real friend. I'm telling you what to do. And I'm like, okay, I'll call on them back. I'm like, own is available for me to do. They're like yeah, you know, yeah, fine, you know. So I come in, I meet mean, we get cool. I do heard the whole preseason before the first season ever happened. Okay, the test of their test run that first season happens. They turn the Union in Adrian with like Ray it's going to do my hair for the rest of the seasons of the real and here I am four season later. Wow, that is amazing. I love that story because people don't get to see the INS and out, so you only see the end result of it. And you know, the relationship that you have with Adrian is very obvious, even on social media, how much love there is between you two, because I swear like every major event that she has you're there, from weddings to Thanksgiving dinner. So I'm like, yeah, they're really tight for real. It's not just for show. So I love that. I love that story. That is so awesome. Now, your manager, when I was booking you for the podcast, told me that you had some brand partnership stuff and some things coming up. I'm not sure what you can actually speak on, but what are some things that you have in the works for the brand of Ray Christopher? And is that what you go by, Ray Christopher, because I have rad yeah, is as in you're in my email and I'm like, wait a minute, is is it Ray Christopher or rady. Well, it. My Name is Ray Christopher, doctor guy it. Okay, at one point I was going...

...by Ray d earlier on in my career. I'm wanted to change it here recently, stopping using greatness the first. Exactly, exactly. But yes, tell us about the cool things that you have coming up that you can share. Okay, I do have a partnership right now with Kata Professional. It's one of my favorite lines. I'm they're branded baster. They actually, actually, they're very first. Oh, congratulations. Thank you. It is a great product company that I'm working for right now. We're moving into soon a little bit more of this so obviousity, more of their social media aspects, but we're still in the work on that. So that's brand new. I'm also now just really dabbling in having my own luxury extension line. Oh yes, love it. That's in the work as well as a product line. But that'll all come. I do so much so it's hard to sit down in one place and really focus on everything. All right, come up. Going to take some time, but it is all on the way. So well, a little advice. Having worked with countless beauty brands, with the color life work with that brand first get all the knowledge. Yes, that's what I need to get, you know, learn the INS and outs of the business, and they may make it easy for you and create your own line under their umbrella. You know, you never know. So you know, make it, make it easy on yourself because, trust and believe, it gets right interesting. But I love that and I think that the timing is amazing for you to have extensions of your brand because, I mean, you're popping on social media. You have over a hundred thou followers. You might as well be a celebrity yourself, because I'm sure you get recognized and people see you like Ray. Let's not, let's not be coy here like well, we see you in La, on the scene with the WHO's who, and but you always have this very joyous and like humble way that you approach things and present yourself. So that's why, you know, we love you even more, but we can't play about you being, you know, with all of the eight girls of Hollywood. See, I in my mind, I don't even think about all of that stuff. Like I said that, there's no normal to me. I like my good, good girlfriend's. I don't really we know, I mean work, at work, but we always need to squeeze a little fun in and meeting the humble. That's just the way I was brought up. Known to me guy. I can give you something, he often can take it away. Absolutely. I never want to take it for granted. I never want to be both full and pride. F always want people to know when I'm blackings come from. You know...

...what I mean. And No, no, the item think that I did it on my own. No, it's very clear that you operate in that, in that manner, and I love it and I love that. You know, your career, the start of your career was epic, first of all. So and then everything that you've said has come to pass your union. Now and then you have new goals that you're, you know, starting and achieving, and it's amazing to see and to show that you can, as an individual, continue to evolve and continue to grow, and that's what we definitely want the listeners to get from this and to be inspired. They don't have to be a hair stylist or in the beauty industry at all to be inspired by these conversations, and that's what, you know, the point is to this, because they people were probably sitting there right now, like I'm majoring in biology and this is not what I want to do and I feel like I need to be a graphic designer or whatever the case is. So you are showing that it is possible and I love it. So let's get a little personal ray, because I need to know how you are able to maintain this career, this career and the schedule of, you know, working on the real having all of your celebrity and non celebrity clients, being a brand ambassador walking red car harpets. I saw you at an awards show, the guild awards. I was like, I need to be invited as like a social media red carpet host or something, I think. But Um, two time emmy nominated, all of this going on, but you managed to have it seems like a flourishing relationship and friendships. How do you balance all of that? Oh, I love balance at all. It's hard. It's very hard. I take it day at a time. Honestly, I really of my family. I'm a big family person. Honestly, if you look at my my Instagram, my story, you'll see my family a lot. So that's also another thing that takes a lot of our time. But I feel like I ask God to make me or keep me busy. So so he's charging me to do my do the best that I can with what he gives me. You know what I mean. So every aspect of my life I make for what I have to make time for, what I need to make time for as one of what I want to make time for. It's really just a mental schedule. I guess right. I don't write, I don't write anything down. I'm terrible when it comes to that. This is the one thing that everybody doesn't like about me when it comes to my friends and family. And I really said I might be late, but I'm I'm totally going to be there. I'm just going to be late, but what have an amazing gift and you know we're gonna have a great convert that drink, but I'm going to be there. Ye, maybe a little late. Other than that, I just pray my way through it all. Well,...

...look, Hey, that's all we can do because we only have twenty four hours in a day and tomorrow is not promised, so we just maximize the time that we have been giving Ray. I can't say it enough. You're absolutely amazing. You know that you forever have the support of the cut life with anything that you have going on. We definitely want to know about product launches events. Well, we'll have to partner on some things for sure in the very near future, because I did. Yes, we're going to. We're going to make it extra lit. I'M gonna come out to La so that I can be like, yeah, I'm one of the eight girls with Ray. Hello, and so, everybody, I want to make sure that you are following Ray Christopher on social media.
